Ruby-throated Hummingbird in a patch of Jewelweed

I was checking the wetland patch next to our driveway for warblers when this female Ruby-throated Hummingbird arrived to make her rounds through the patch of Jewelweed. She must fatten up for her journey south.

She works her wings like rotating rudders

Lift off!  --- She'll probably be back tomorrow.

Happy Birding!

  15. OK, that does it - I'm going to have to book an air ticket to come and see these birds! Well, maybe!

My heron is in the same genus as your Great Blue - so thats why they look similar!t

  19. How appropriate, a flying jewel at the jewelweed plant. Fabulous photographs of this beautiful hummingbird in-flight and sipping nectar! I will feel very sad when they leave. They are such a delight to observe. Terrific post!

  24. Hi Hilke,
Beautiful set of pictures. it amazed me how small they were when i saw them in Panama, undertaking this big south-north migration might be terrible for them!
