Singing House Finches and other birds from around my house on World Bird Wednesday

The day before the arctic deep freeze descended again on our region and the temperature was still hovering around 30 F, I heard a cheery chorus of birds singing in the tall pines near the entrance of our driveway. Glancing up I saw what looked like pink puffy ornaments hanging high up in the branches, which on closer inspection tuned out to be a company House Finches, celebrating spring perhaps a little early.

Male House Finch

A male Common Redpoll appeared at our feeder

Dark-eyed Juncos have been turning up every day.

And this is a Brown Adult Female

The balmy weather only lasted about one day. Now we are back in the deep freeze -- important to keep the feeders and suet nets stocked.

  4. That's a lovely chirpy chorus from the finches Hilke. A few of our species are beginning to sing now ... hopefully that suggests the weather may brighten up.

  10. Nice series Hilke. The Juncos always looked a bit puffed out against the cold.

I can't seem to keep our feeders full, I guess they need fuel in this cold weather.

  19. I used to have HOFI's all the time in AZ, Now they stop by sparsely and sporratically! Would love to see a redpoll! I haven't seen one in years! Hawks have been hunting my feeders lately scaring all the birds away! A sharpie got one yesterday.
