The day before the arctic deep freeze descended again on our region and the temperature was still hovering around 30 F, I heard a cheery chorus of birds singing in the tall pines near the entrance of our driveway. Glancing up I saw what looked like pink puffy ornaments hanging high up in the branches, which on closer inspection tuned out to be a company House Finches, celebrating spring perhaps a little early.
Male House Finch
A male Common Redpoll appeared at our feeder
Dark-eyed Juncos have been turning up every day.
And this is a Brown Adult Female
The balmy weather only lasted about one day. Now we are back in the deep freeze -- important to keep the feeders and suet nets stocked.

ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely chirpy chorus from the finches Hilke. A few of our species are beginning to sing now ... hopefully that suggests the weather may brighten up.
ReplyDeleteLovely series of images. FAB.
The finches in the tree are just beautiful! It's a big world! I expect to have to turn the air conditioners on later today!!
ReplyDeleteThese are pretty photos. I noticed our House Finches singing last week too!
ReplyDeleteLoved the recording of the finches. Your pictures in the pines are beautiful to say the least. It is hard to get a photo of a Dark Eyed Junko where you can actuallly see the eye! Great stuff!

ReplyDeleteNice series Hilke. The Juncos always looked a bit puffed out against the cold.
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to keep our feeders full, I guess they need fuel in this cold weather.
Excellent photos-I like the little puffy ornamnets in the tree and envy your redpoll visitor.I've been trying to find one in CT but no luck yet.

Super shots. The sassy little Finches are always a favorite.
ReplyDeleteRe the N. Shrike. I thought it may be a young one too. Thanks for confirming it for me. MB
All birds in this post are beautiful, but the 'pink puffy Xmas ornaments' are indeed awesome! Wonderful visitors.
ReplyDeleteI used to have HOFI's all the time in AZ, Now they stop by sparsely and sporratically! Would love to see a redpoll! I haven't seen one in years! Hawks have been hunting my feeders lately scaring all the birds away! A sharpie got one yesterday.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots- our juncos look a little different, love to see the varieties out there.
ReplyDeleteOh, they are so lovely.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of puffy prettyness :)
